National Homeownership Month (1).png

June is National Homeownership Month, a national observance that began as National Homeownership Week in 1995 and was expanded to a full month in 2002. The original message was simple: homeownership can help families build stability, plant roots, and participate more fully in community life. Over time, the focus has broadened from simply increasing homeownership to making sure homeownership is affordable, sustainable, and accessible to households that have historically been left out of the market.

For community land trusts, National Homeownership Month is a reminder that the “American Dream” only works when people can realistically reach it — and keep it. CLTs help make that possible by pairing homeownership opportunity with lasting affordability, so public investment and community support benefit not just one household, but future generations of homeowners as well. Today, as housing prices continue to outpace local incomes, shared-equity homeownership is one practical way to keep homeownership rooted in community rather than speculation.
